Winter Safety Tips!

By Seneca Hose Company #1
January 23, 2026

As winter continues, the fire prevention team offers important safety reminders for all community members.

With extremely cold temperatures expected in the area, take extra care when using space heaters. Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip. Make sure to keep a clear space around the heater, free of any items that could catch fire.

When removing snow around your home or building, remember to keep high-efficiency appliance exhaust vents clear. Blocked vents can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup inside. This is a good opportunity to check your carbon monoxide detectors. Ensure they have fresh batteries and are installed in spaces where appliances are located and in areas where people sleep or spend time.

Finally, if you are shoveling, snow blowing, or outside building a snowman, please take a moment to clear snow away from your nearest fire hydrant. Accessible fire hydrants can save lives during an emergency.

Share this information with neighbors and friends, and consider sharing photos of your cleared fire hydrant to help build community awareness.
